Wednesday 1st February – 10:50am – Yesterday evening we had our first beach training session – I am knackered…
The last few days have been super boring. I understand its difficult to complain when I live on a beach, and have next to no work, get 3 free meals a day and play rugby everyday, but man is it repetitive. Due to a lack of customers, the last few days we have done literally nothing.
Rugby was cancelled on Saturday, due to only 3 guys turning up, so we had a two day lay off. Sunday 30th was a typical lazy Sunday, with lots of food and rest. The rain storms seems be getting worse, which is slightly unnerving moving into our last few weeks. Last night a lightning storm was right above us, and I actually feared for my life running to the bathroom to brush my teeth.
The rugby however has seen a slight improvement. With the help of a Samoan NRL Coach, we have developed a small game plan, and with players fitting into positions it is working well. We have calls that most understand, and a universal cut move that we use excessively. The rest will be down to pure flare. One positive being that I will likely be starting at dummy half, with quite a good player at fly-half. We have developed a kind of unspoken dialect where we mouth words to each other, as the language barrier is still quite difficult. It began just as 1 and 2 number moves in the rugby game to shield our calls from the opposition, but it has now expanded to greetings and general chit-chat. It makes it easier to converse with him, and when we are training the game is looking more fluid.
This evening we are hoping to get onto the actual training field for the first time, to run some moves and use the width. That’s if I don’t succumb to boredom and walk into the sea before…
