North Island, New Zealand, Week 6a

Tuesday 22nd November – 20:45pm – In the hostel kitchen, waiting for my rice to cook…

I have had a mixed first day in the Mount. After arriving I was picked up by Ryan and immediately saw a problem with transport. In Ryan’s car there were 2 seats, and space for 2 people to sleep in the back. These were taken by him and Joe (Dog). The other car was owned by two other British lads, Kieron and Marley, who were friends of Ryan’s from Cornwall. They had a slightly larger van which could fit 3 people in the front, but still only 2 in the back. It was cramp, but due to this I was able to drive around with these two lads instead of walking everywhere, and they were a massive help.

On the first evening Ryan took me to the BBQ spot, and we ate some food at the beach front on the public BBQ’s. After this I took my lift to the hostel, and went to sleep. I had planned to sleep in the next day, then walk into town and see what I could get up to then see Ryan after he finished work. Much to plan I woke and left my room at 10:30am, heading into town to see the sights. I walked on the beach, explored the town centre and chilled with Marley and Kieron at the skate park a bit. I managed to get some food for the next few days, and met some of the guys in the hostel and played ping pong with 2 of them. It was a good day, however I felt myself drifting into a slight depression. I think due to my boredom I began thinking of my future, and my money situation and how I was going to afford everything. It took me to sit down at a computer and work out my finances, to realise I actually had more money than I thought and I was doing well. I think sometimes when I get bored my mind wonders about how I am here doing nothing rather than back at home working towards a future I have no idea what is yet. To force myself into a working mood I emailed some sporting websites, asking if there was any freelance or volunteer work going that I could take part in overseas – it will most likely get no response, but it was worth a try and did it’s job to distract my mind from thinking I had no working prospects in life.

After a day of doing very little, I went to meet Ryan at the skate park and we went to the beach for some casual beers and food. It was great to see the sunset over the beach, and we planned some days out over the weekend. I am actually excited to travel and relax with Ryan, as he has been working for most of the time I have been here. I am currently sat in the hostel kitchen, surrounded by german people, waiting for my rice to be cooked.

I NEED TO TALK TO MORE PEOPLE! This lack of confidence is worrying me…
